INSTALLING TRAVELLER UNIVERSE ============================= I ODBC II Multiple CPUs III System Restore IV Fast User Switching V Intel Xeon CPUs I ODBC The Windows environment must be Windows 98 (or later) or Windows NT4 with Service Pack 4 (or later). In addition your system must be set up to use ODBC data sources (look for an ODBC data sources icon in Control Panel). If this is not already set up on your machine you will need to get the appropriate copies of DCOM and MDAC from Microsoft and install them first. II Multiple CPUs Users of WinNT (Windows NT4, Windows 2000,and Windows XP) who have more than one CPU in their machine need to be aware of the following: InterBase is written to work on a single CPU, there is a problem where WinNT will keep reassigning CPUs to InterBase and this will slow InterBase down. To correct this you need to set the CPU affinity of the InterBase process to a single CPU. This can be done with a utility called "IBAffinity", which can be found at http://www.ait-augsburg.de/download/ib_affinity.zip III System Restore Users of Windows XP need to be aware of the following: the System Restore feature in Windows XP Professional backs up key files whenever you change them. Unfortunately it thinks that InterBase databases are key files ... so everytime you start Universe it will back up its database (which can take time). There are two workarounds ... you can turn off this feature of Windows completely, or you can turn off this feature on the partition or hard disk on which InterBase and Universe are installed. 1 Turn off system restore. a Go to "Start" b Right click on "My Computer" c Select "Properties" d Select the "Restore" tab e Check the "Turn off System Restore on all drives" box 2 Install InterBase and Universe on a different hard drive or partition and turn off Restore on the drive. a Go to "Start" b Right click on "My Computer" c Select "Properties" d Select the "Restore" tab e In "Drive settings" area select the drive you installed InterBase and Universe. f Select the "Settings..." button g Check "Turn off System Restore on this drive" IV Fast User Switching There is a second issue for Windows XP: Fast User Switching. InterBase can only be installed by a member of the Administrator group and when Fast User Switching is enabled only a member of that group can use InterBase. The only known workaround is not to use Fast User Switching. V Intel Xeon CPUs If your machine uses Intel Xeon processors, you should disable hyperthreading in the system BIOS. [END OF FILE]
